Central and North Texas sit on Blackland Prairie clay with a plasticity index high enough to lift and drop a slab through a single wet-dry cycle. Thickening the mat does not fix that; treating the subgrade and building a base that drains does. In the Valley the problem inverts — a high water table and saline soils attack from below.
